Websites that secretly record or track you

The California Invasion of Privacy Act (CIPA)

California has a privacy law called CIPA. It's been around since 1967. The new wave of cases involves websites that quietly record what you type and click, often using tools from outside companies, without ever telling you. That counts.

What it covers

Recording or listening in on conversations without everyone's permission. On the web, this includes sites that quietly record everything you do (every keystroke, every click, every form you fill in), usually with tools made by other companies.

What it pays

Up to $5,000 each time you were tracked without being told. Each separate session can count separately.

What we'll need to know

  • The website or business involved.
  • What kind of tracking happened (session recording, call recording, chat surveillance).
  • Whether you saw any consent banner before being tracked.
